Leading Quaker minister and printer of the early 19th century...second editor of the "Philanthrophist", the first anti-slavery newspaper in the U.S., printed in Mount Pleasant, Jefferson County, Ohio from 1817 to 1822.

Elisha7 Bates (Benjamin6, Fleming5, John4, John3, George2, John1) was the son of Benjamin Bates (1739-1804) and Hannah Green (1741-1820) of York County, Virginia. His Bates Family ancestors had been Quakers since John3 Bates.

The items below may explain part of the reason he left Virginia and began his publication:

5/3/1806 - Elisha was fined by Richard Cocke, deputy sheriff of York Co., for not attending musters; also paid fines due from Benjamin Bates, now dec; the latter paid to George Jack "late deputy sheriff of York Co."

5/2/1807 - Elisha reported as having suffered seizure of a cart by Samuel Shields, deputy sheriff of York Co.; at same session he is co of Skimino Mtg. [Source: Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. VI, Virginia; William Wade Hinshaw, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc.,1973; pg. 156.]
