James Back Killed in Mines

James (Jim) Back of Blackey, Ky., was fatally injured in the coal mines of Collins and Adams Coal Co., on Camp Branch, Saturday, Sept. 7th. He was caught in a slate fall and suffered injuries in the head and chest. He was rushed to the Hazard Hospital, but lived only a few hours. He was the son of the late Dave and Raney Caudill Back and was born on Dec. 7, 1891, being 54 years, 9 months and 10 days of age at his death. He was married to Matha Griffie, who preceded him in death three years ago. He is survived by four children: Mrs. Irene Martin of Blackey, and Iva Jean, Billie Dean and Jewell Dean at home; three brothers, John Back of Sandlick, Marion Back of Blackey, Floyd Back of Grear, Ky., and Mrs. Martha Jane Whitaker of Hallie, Ky. Jim was a hard-working man, honest and good to everybody. He was well-liked in his community and by his fellow-workmen. He was a good father and friend. Funeral services were held at the residence of Harve Whitaker, Linefork, Ky., on Monday, Sept. 9, 1946 at 11:00 A.M. o'clock, with Elders Bee Ison, Jim Pratt and Si Banks, officiating. Burial in the Whitaker Cemetery, Linefork, Ky., Craft Funeral Home in charge of funeral arrangements.
