In 1862 he joined Company B of the Seventh Regiment, but soon after joined the One Hundred and Seventy eighth New York Volunteers. A year later he was appointed Lieutenant by President Lincoln and assigned to the Third Regiment United States Volunteers, or Vollman's Brigade. His next assignment included the engineer coprs. After the war he was transferred to the Southwest where he remained in service until he was mustered out in 1867. He suffered one injury in his service that being at the hand of one of Scotts Guerrillas.

Charles married Mary A. Britton in 1877. Then in 1883, after the birth of their second child, Mary filed for a divorce from Charles claiming that he had left her and had given her no financial support.
