He was a geologist. He and his first wife Annie Freshour were married at Jacksonville, Oregon on April 14, 1907.

Mr. Macaulay was shot twice in the abdomen because he reprimanded a stranger for using profanity in front of his wife.

Two men were held in the Phoenix city jail, one as Macaulay's suspected assailant and the other as a material witness in the shooting.

William D. Williams, a 57-year-old health seeker, who told county authorities he came here a month ago from Corona, California, was charged with the murder of Mr. Macaulay, a few hours after Macaulay died in St. Joseph's Hospital from two bullet wounds inflicted Wednesday night.

Ben Palmer, 26, whom the county attorney's office has ordered held as a material witness, was sentenced to 10 days' imprisonment when adjudged guilty in police court of appearing on city streets in a drunk and disorderly condition (this was during prohibition).

Both Williams and Palmer were said by police to have been under the influence of liquor when brought to police headquarters. Mr. Williams claimed that he had no memory of having shot Mr. Macaulay.

The shooting occurred in the Tourist Hotel, 602 W. Van Buren Street, shortly after 10 o'clock Wednesday night where his 2nd wife Ida Macaulay was the proprietor. She told officers she had retired to her room before the shooting occurred.

2nd wife is:
Ida Burrell; b. 1888 in Siskiyou County.

He was transported from St. Francis Cemetery in Phoenix to Los Angeles.

His DOB on his death certificate is correct and matches the records in the family bible.
