Beginning as a carpenter,like his father in Ireland, James Gillespie became a successful building contractor in the Chicago area and contributed to the construction of homes in the early 20th century in many Chicago neighborhoods including the Beverly Community. He was a member of the Blackstone Lodge #1124 AF&AM Grand Crossing Chapter #219. Residing at 7259 Crandon Ave, James Gillespie died 8 January 1937 at the age of 75. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Harper Gillespie Johnston, sister Margaret Gillespie Turner of Chicago and Rolling Prairie, Ind., brother Noble Gillespie of Chicago and New York.Survived by wife, Anna, son Fredrick James Gillespie, daughter Jean Gillespie Wenner and grandchildren William Harper Johnston, James Francis Gillespie, Betty M Gillespie, Clark F Gillespie, John Gillespie Wenner, Barbara J Wenner.
