Judith and Charles Milton Howard were married Sept. 21, 1862 at Black Oak, Mahaska County, Iowa. They were the parents of thirteen children: Idella Isabella, Malinda Elizabeth, Minnie Viola, Emma Arilla, Martha Louisa, Judith Idella, Nellie Estella, Charles William, Melvin Err, Everett Milton, Zoa Naoma, Grover Cleveland and an unknown infant daughter.
Charles Milton Howard and Judith Lodica Ferguson's daughter, Martha Louisa, married George Douglas McCombs.
When Judith passed, Charles cut the tree branch and carved her name in it to mark her burial place. He wrote a letter home to Martha telling of her mother's passing and the location. Years later Martha, along with her daughter Iona Pearl, visited the gravesite. My great-Aunt Iona told me the story. submitted by Carol McCombs
