He was the son of Rufus Mashburn and Martha Matilda (Smith) Ashe. His grave marker says he was born in 1880... his death certificate says he was born in 1885. His obituaries follow:

Funeral services for James Arthur Ashe, age 7,6 who died at his residence in Hillview Heights early Wednesday morning after a long illness, were conducted today at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Gallant Funeral Home, with Rev. D. D. Smothers and Rev. C. B. Smith officiating. Burial was in the Riverview Memorial Gardens.

He was a native of Georgia, having moved to Fayetteville two years ago. He was retired from the U. S. Forest Service.

He was the son of the late Mashburn and Martha Smith Ashe, and a member of the Baptist Church.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Marie Grant Ashe; one step-daughter, Mrs. Jane Wakefield; one sister, Mrs. W. C. Turner of Covington, Kentucky; six brothers, Ernest Ashe and Wilford Ashe, both of Cleveland, Georgia, Carl and Lon Ashe, both of Bishop, Georgia, Ben Ashe of Gainesville, Georgia, and Joe Ashe of Blairsville, Georgia.

Funeral Rites Conducted Here This Afternoon For James Arthur Ashe, 76 --

Funeral services for James Arthur Ashe, 76, who died at his residence in Hillview Heights early Wednesday morning after a long illness, were conducted this afternoon at 2 o'clock in the chapel of the Gallant Funeral Home. The Rev. D. D. Smothers and the Rev. C. B. Smith officiated, and burial was in Riverview Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Ashe was a native of Georgia. He was retired from the U. S. Forestry Service and moved to Fayetteville two years ago. He was the son of the late Mashburn and Martha Smith Ashe, and was a member of the Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marie Grant Ashe; one step-daughter, Mrs. Jane Wakefield; one sister, Mrs. W. C. Turner of Covington, Kentucky; six brothers, Earnest Ashe and Wilford Ashe, both of Cleveland, Georgia, Carl Ashe and Lon Ashe, both of Bishop, Georgia, Ben Ashe of Gainesville, Georgia, and Joe Ashe of Blairsville, Georgia.
