Auxiliary Bishop For The Archdiocese Of Detroit - Father Anderson was appointed by Pope John Paul II and ordained bishop on Jan. 27, 1983. This appointment made him the first black bishop in the Archdiocese of Detroit and the seventh black bishop in the United States. (He was ordained a priest in 1958.)
