Ruth Ann Stauber Elsbernd was born December 3, 1927 in Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky to John Christian Stauber and Anna Christine Simon Stauber. She was the fourth-born of six children. Ruth's father died when Ruth was only seven years old. Her mother raised her six children alone working as a seamstress. Ruth was Catholic, and her heritage was German. She was also a cancer survivor.

On September 3, 1949 in Newport, Ruth married Ralph Albert Elsbernd, and they had five children: Ralph Christian Elsbernd, Mary Ann Elsbernd, Barbara Ann Elsbernd Benson, Mark Albert Elsbernd, and Beverly Ann Elsbernd Ackley. Ruth died at age 77 on May 13, 2005 in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Omaha near her husband.
