United States Marine Corps General. She made history by becoming the first female to attain the rank of general officer with the United States Marine Corps in 1978. After graduating from parochial high school in Baltimore, Maryland, she attained a Bachelor of Arts in Geography from the University of Michigan. Her military career began in 1952, when she was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant with the Marine Corps Reserves and four years later she was appointed the regular Marine Corps. After holding numerous commands over the next decade which included Commanding Officer of the Woman Officer School, she was elevated to the rank of Colonel in 1970. In April 1978, she was nominated by President Jimmy Carter for the rank of Brigadier General and promoted to that position. Additionally, she served as Deputy Director of Information at Marine Corps Headquarters. She retired from active duty in 1980. During the course of her career, she was the recipient of two Legion of Merit Awards for "exceptional meritorious service". She would go onto serve as director of Catholic charities in the Arlington, Virginia-area. She died of complications from Alzheimer's disease.
