Martial Brigouleix
Birth: Apr. 24, 1903
Death: Oct. 2, 1943

French Military Hero. Born in Ambrugeat (Corrèze) into a farming family, he was appointed a reserve officer in 1923 and promoted to second lieutenant in 1924; assigned to the 22nd Riflemen in Verdun; later appointed professor of French and History-Geography at the Tulle Military Academy perparatory school in November 1924. With the war mobilization in September 1939, he took command of a company of 126ème IH. During operations in Aisne, Alsace, he returned survivors of his company to Haute-Vienne in May 1940 where he was then demobilized as a captain in July 1940 and cited twice for his courage; he then resumed his academy assignment at Tulle unitl he was discharged by the Vichy government in 1941. Then became guild chamber seceretary and devoted himself to organizing the Resistance becoming departmental head of the Secret Army (ACE) in Corrèze in 1942 where he directed the first groups of ACE. He expended untiring energy serving Corrèze resistance. His office, on the 1st floor of the Popular Bank at Tulle, became a secret agent operation. The Militia, informed of his activities, requested his immediate arrest by the Prefecture who refused. Feeling the vice tightening, Brigouleix planned to secretly disappear when the Gestapo appeared at his office on April 17, 1943 and arrested him. Imprisoned at Limoges, where he was secretly tortured for three weeks but did not talk, he was then transferred on May 26 to Fort Romainville. On September 27, a German officer was killed in Paris and in reprisal 50 hostages were to be shot. He was among those ordered to die. Military service awards included: Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, Companion of the Liberaton by decree of October 19, 1945 and Military Cross awarded in 1939 and 1945 (3 citations).
