Frances Louise Currey Brown, a.k.a. Grandma Fran, of Berryville, AR, was born on Oct. 19, 1925, in Indianapolis, IN and grew up in Jennings County, IN. She was a daughter of Harley and Lenore (Spencer) Netherland. She peacefully departed this life on Dec. 4, 2012, in Eureka Springs, AR at the age of 87 years.
Frances received a Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Ball State University and went on to teach 3rd grade at Liberty Elementary School in Liberty, IN.
In the early 1970's Frances started drawing picture cards for her granddaughter Margaret. This led to an accomplished career as a primitive artist. She became known as Grandma Fran. Today, her paintings hang in many galleries around the world, as well as in the home of President Jimmy Carter and that of President Johnson's daughter Luci. She was also recently recognized by the International Biographical Centre as a member of the Top 100 Professionals for 2012.
As well as her loving husband George, whom she married on Mar. 3, 1987, Frances is survived by two sons, James Clarkson (Maggie) of Pascagula, MS, John Clarkson of Liberty, IN; a daughter, Deborah Cromis (Charles) of Hardinsburg, KY; a step-daughter, Nancy Snow (Ronald) of Fairhope, AL; grandchildren, Margaret Clarkson-Heintzleman; Marc and Brian Cromis; Katrina, Steven and Tristan Clarkson; great-grandchildren, Jeremiah and Caleb Cromis; Alicia and Patrick Heintzleman; and Quinn Clarkson; a sister Florence Seay; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harley and Lenore Netherland; former husband, Thomas Currey; and her brother-in-law, Jerry Seay.
A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012 at the United Methodist Church in Berryville with interment at Sylvan-Abbey Memorial Park in Clearwater, FL.
