Erland was the son of Philetus Willard Torrey of Dixfield, Oxford County, Maine and Frances Violet Stickney of Carthage, Franklin County, Maine. Philetus was married three times. Philetus married Frances Violet Stickney on 09 May 1878 in Carthage, Franklin County, Maine. Frances and Philetus had two children. They were: Erland Clyde Torrey was born on 04 April 1882; and Leo Gerard (George) Torrey was born on 20 June 1884. Both children were born in Dixfield, Oxford County, Maine. Philetus married Annie M. During the World War he was at Plattsburg and Camp Devens, in the 76th Division. As an instructor in small arms he was considered an expert.

Note: Retired after 25 years of service as Chief Warden with the Maine State Inland Fisheries & Game Department. In 1924 he was Sheriff of Oxford County.
