The two had been friends since high school. Meindert died in July 1991 in Allegan, Allegan County, in the western part of Michigan, about eight months after their marriage. Gwen died in February 1998 at the age of 89 years in Highland.

(Kristin) Zandstra of Highland; sister, Esther Vanden Berge of Grand Rapids, Michigan; grandson, Jeffery (Florencia) Stoll of Highland; granddaughter, Melissa (Richard) Whiting of Griffith; great grandsons, Raymond Stoll, Andrew Whiting and Michael Stoll; great granddaughter, Ashley Stoll. Preceded in death by grandsons, Kenneth Zandstra and Gregory Stoll, granddaughter, Gwen Stoll and husbands, Bartel Zandstra and Meindert DeJong. Funeral services will be private. Burial at Hope Cemetery, Highland. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of the Calumet Area. Arrangements by Kuiper Funeral Home of Highland.
