Evening Times, Cumberland, Maryland, Wed 16 Jan 1918: "BURIAL POSTPONED BECAUSE OF DRIFT-Could not reach cemetery at Midland with body of Thomas P. Melvin-Midland, Md--Jan 16. Thomas P. Melvin 44 years old formerly of this place was killed at Lochgelley, W. Va. on Friday January 14. Mr. Melvin held a position thus as mine foreman. He and his two brothers were entering the mine by a cage which gave away dropping to the bottom of the shaft. Mr. Melvin died two hours after the accident. His brothers were taken to the hospital at McHenry, W. Va. He had the surviving--his mother Elizabeth Melvin, wife and seven children, Stanton, John, James, Joseph, Edward, Elizabeth, and Margaret. Three sisters - Mrs. Myles Byrne, Midland, Mrs. John Acklin, Waynesburg, PA, and Elizabeth Melvin, Piedmont, WVa. Three brothers James, John, and Edward. The funeral was held this morning with requiem high mass at St. Joseph Church. Mr. Melvin was a member of Gary Council, Knights of Columbus and Midland Division #5 Ancient Order of Hibernians. Owing to the snow storm which held Midland in its grip all day yesterday it was impossible for the funeral procession to reach St. Joseph Cemetery on a hill above the town. At some places the snow drifted two to fifteen feet. After leaving the church an attempt was made to reach the cemetery but the blinding snow made it impossible. The body was taken to the home of Mrs. Myles Byrne, sister of Mr. Melvin."
