Jeremiah "Jerome" Leake was born to Richard and Elizabeth Belinda (Shircliffe) Leake in 1813 near Raywick, KY. He was the grandson James "Rebel" and Mary (______) Leake and Thomas Shircliffe and Elizabeth (Hopewell)Shircliffe Dant. His siblings were: Mary (Leake) Drury, c.1807-xxxx; Leo Leake, 1810-1874; James "Blinky" Leake, 1819-1902; and Gabriel Leake, 1823-1883. Jerome married Mary Ann "Maria Martin, 1814-1881, daughter of Samuel Lee Martin and Mary "Polly" (Leake) Darnell Martin. Jerome and Maria were the parents of: Mary Jane (Leake) Mattingly, 1835-1889; Elizabeth Jane "Eliza" (Leake) Vancleave, 1839-1899; Richard Columbus "Dick" Leake, 1845-1915; Martha Leake, 1847-1924; James Joseph Leake, 1849-xxxx; Catherine Leake, 1853-185x; and William M. Leake, 1856-xxxx.

Jerome served as a Union soldier in Company "H", Sixth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. Jerome enlisted August 1,1862 and mustered in Sep. 15,1862 at Louisville, KY. On page 82 of the Adjutant General's Report for the Union Army, Volume I, it calls him Jerome Leek and says that he "Died of wounds at Raywick, Kentucky, April 12, 1864." Ron Leake, of Missouri, the leading genealogist of this family says that Jerome, while on a 30-day furlough beginning Jan. 22, 1864, he was delayed because Guerillas were in the area around his home and that he was shot and died at his home.
