Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Illinois Volunteer Light Artillery, then on the staff of Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant, first as his Chief of Artillery, then as Assistant Inspector General. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". He served as United States Consul to Glasgow, Scotland from 1867 to1 869.
