Danish composer, violin virtuoso, band leader and publisher. In 1921 he became leader of the big orchestra at the Palads cinema in Copenhagen. The orchestra accompanied the silent films, and it was as accompaniment to one of these films in 1925, "Don Q, Son of Zorro," that he composed one of the biggest evergreens in music history, the tango "Jealousy." The melody became famous when conductor Arthur Fiedler and his famous Boston Pops Orchestra recorded it in 1935, and this version sold over one million copies, the first major hit orchestral record ever. Since then the tango has been performed and recorded by many different artists, e.g. Vera Lynn, Plácido Domingo, Yehudi Menuhin, symphony orchestras, concert bands, and any imaginable variety of soloists. The piece brings in around DKK 1 million a year in royalties. The Jacob Gade Prize - worth DKK 50,000 - is awarded every year to a promising young musician.
