John Ross Barton, age 57, widely known Gardendale building contractor and church worker, died Thursday at a local hospital.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Gardendale with Rev. Walter G. Nunn and Rev. M.H. Cunningham officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Brown Service Norwood directing.

The body will be at the church an hour before the services.

A native of Talladega County, Mr. Barton was in the building contracting business 25 years and had lived in Gardendale 24 years.

Mr. Barton was a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and superintendent of the adult department at First Baptist Church of Gardendale. He also was the builder of the church pastorium.

He was founder of the Baptist denomination's Deacons Retreat at Shocco Springs, Alabama.

Mr. Barton was a member of the Birmingham Homebuilders Association and a former member of the Jaycees.

Survivors include his wife, Dora Alice Barton; son, John Ross Barton, Jr.; daughter, Alice Lynne Barton; mother, Jessie Barton; and brother, Clarence W. Barton, all of Gardendale, Alabama.
