US Congressman, Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was admitted to the bar in 1849 and commenced law practice in Corning, Steuben County, New York. He was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth Congress serving March 4, 1859 to March 3, 1861. At the outbreak of the Civil War he assisted in raising the 10th Regiment, New York Volunteer Cavalry and was appointed Colonel in command on November 25, 1861. He with his regiment served in fifty-five battle engagements from 1862 to the last conflict at Appomattox, Virginia in April 1865. For his war duties he was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865 and was also adjutant general on the staff of Governor Fenton from 1865 to 1866. After the war he moved to California and continued the practice of law until his death.
