Published in Daily Press from August 4 to August 6, 2012 (in part): HAMPTON - Gene Ward Mingee Sr. passed away peacefully at his home on Aug. 2, 2012, surrounded by his children.

Born March 4, 1927, in the front bedroom at 401 N. Willard Ave., in Phoebus, Virginia, to William Farrar Mingee and Mary James, he was a lifelong Hampton resident. In 1948, he married the love of his life, Margaret Earhart, in the rectory of Saint Mary's Church, Fort Monroe. He was employed as the manager at Mugler's of Phoebus men's clothing store, retiring after 50 years in 1992.

Gene was a loving husband and a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by two daughters, Carla Gene Mingee, of Newport News and Karen Mingee Nasal (Carl), of Yorktown; two sons, Gene W. Mingee Jr. (Melanie), of Hampton and Glen A. Mingee (Mika), of Moseley; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth Hampton (Kevin), Carrie Barroso (Michael Booth), Justin Russell, Ashton Lee Mingee, Zachary Mingee, Cecilia Mingee, Olivia Mingee, Zachary Brickhouse and Gracelyn Espineira; and three great-grandchildren, Garrison Gene Hampton, Wyatt Hampton and Rosco Hampton.

Gene proudly lived for 56 years in a house constructed by him and his brothers. He was an icon in his beloved hometown of Phoebus, recognized fondly everywhere he went. He was loved and respected by countless many, and never had an unkind word about anyone. He will be missed terribly by family and friends alike.

Gene was predeceased by his wife, Margaret, in 2009. She was his everything, and it is only fitting that his life will be celebrated on the day which would have been their 64th wedding anniversary. To honor him and his devotion to her, the family requests that memorials support her charity and be in the form of contributions to The Salvation Army – VA PA Command, 1033 Big Bethel Rd., Hampton, 23666, Attention Vicki Davis for the benefit of Toys for Tots and the Salvation Army's Angel Tree Program.
