LtCol Ernest Marion Duckworth, Retired of El Paso, Texas died Sunday, June 10, 2012 at his home after battling a dreadful 41 days of painful cancer. Ernest was born in Providence, Rhode Island, October 25, 1916 to Kay and Alma Duckworth.

Ernest was an excellent student and received his Bachelor of Science in Biology. He was drafted into the military and was commissioned into the US Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was a Navigator Bombardier in a B24 Liberator, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star and the Silver Star before returning home from Libya North Africa where he bombed Rommel's supply lines.

Ernest's commission was transferred to the US Air Force when it was established and he was subsequently stationed in many places during his service with the last at the Pentagon. He worked diligently nights during that time to acquire his Master of Arts Degree in Education from the American University in Washington, D.C. Ernest retired from the military in 1967 and began teaching at Ben Milam Elementary School in El Paso.

Ernest retired again in 1979, and with wife Eunice began their volunteer work at Church and at William Beaumont Medical Center as American Red Cross Volunteers.

Ernest is survived by his wife of 70 years, Eunice; his two sons, Ernest Marion Duckworth, Jr. of Sedalia, CO and John Sherman Duckworth of Burke, VA and their respective wives Cindy and Donna; with a total of five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Family relatives mourning the loss of Ernest include his only surviving sibling, Miriam Leighton, sister in law Beatrice Robinson, nieces, nephews and a host of family friends around the country.

The family would like to thank the Doctors at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, the Caring Senior Service, and the Cuidado-Casero (Home Health and Hospice) of El Paso for their compassionate care.

We also thank Rev. Melinda St.Clair for her very dear support to Ernest and the family.

There will be a Memorial Service at All Saints Episcopal Church in El Paso on Monday, June 18, 2012 at 11:00 AM.

Ernest will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery will full military honors in October.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Cancer Society or to All Saints Episcopal Church in El Paso, Texas.
