John Belz was born in Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, the second of eight children. His parents were Ferdinand Belz and Margaret Ott of Germany who immigrated to the United States in 1848.

He came to Bloomington when he was 18 years old and was first employed as a cattle buyer for Gus Fleischman. Later he went to work at the Chicago and Alton Railroad Shops and was employed as a table transfer operator for 42 years.

He married Julia Elizabeth Braun on August 24, 1875 in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois.

They had four children, Margaret, Frank Joseph, Albert George and Augusta.
