Effie grew up outside of Ft. Riley, KS and was the third oldest of eighteen children. She spent much of her early years working at Fort Riley and it was there that she met Cpl John F. Lawlor.
Prior to the death of her husband Effie went to work at the U.S. Post Office in downtown New Haven, Connecticut. The 1924 New Haven City Directory lists Effie as 'emp PO bdg res. 173 Exchange.' Although she spent her adult life in New Haven and raised her family there she never forgot her western roots. She made frequent trips back to Kansas and Colorado and to Oklahoma where her parents and some of her siblings moved to. The large Guthrie family reunions had become a tradition and Effie's visits were always looked forward to by her siblings and many nieces and nephews. Effie's love of family was passed down to her many descendants and the recent reorganization of the Guthrie family reunions in 1994 have helped to keep most of this branch of the Lawlor family in constant touch with each other.
