From all accounts my Great Grandfather, Charles Frederick Mader was a Dandy, a performer, a man about town. A good looking man who liked to have his picture taken, which was easily accomplished as his brother, Frederick C. was a professional photographer. He was a very accomplished musician, playing in many bands, directing some, giving music lessons. His most interesting musical note probably was giving music lessons to and being good friends with Warren G. Harding; and having an opportunity to join John Philip Sousa's Band. His wife, Granny wanted no part of his traveling about to further his musical career, and so he also was a grocer. At one point his residence was above and behind the family grocery store; with his brother's photography studio in the same building.

Charley Mader was one of our finest cornet players. He left Chillicothe in the early
1880's and went to Marion, Ohio, where he led their brass band. In Marion he taught
Warren G. Harding the rudiments of horn-playing. Returning to Chillicothe he played in
the 20th Century Band and gave music lessons at his Mill Street home. He directed the Clarksburg Band at the Republican Rally in Clarksburg on September 20, 1910. On that occasion our soon-to-be president, Warren G. Harding, was pleasantly surprised to discover his old friend and teacher. He recalled how Charley looked cross at him many times when giving lessons and also when they played in the band together at the Ross County Fair. Harding, who played the slide trombone, became President of the U.S. in 1920.

Charles F. Mader, 365 Mill Street passed away Friday evening at ten o'clock with heart disease, following an illness of one week. The deceased was born January 29, 1860 in this city, son of William H. & Marquerite Heinlen (typo in paper, Heinlein is correct), Mader, and was married to Mary Gartner, November 29, 1888. The deceased was a faithful member of the Walnut Street M.E. church, and will be sadly missed in the community.
Surviving him besides his widow are four children: Mrs. George H. Mathewson of Winnepeg Canada, Mrs. Harry S. Allen of Memphis, Tenn; Albert Mader and Miss Irene Mader of this city. One sister Mrs. Barbara Hagemann of this city and a brother, Jacob S. Mader of Bucyrus, Ohio also survive.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. from the residence with Rev. Vorhis officiating. burial will be made in Grandview cemetery.
