Jerusha was the daughter of Cyntha (Knickerbocker) (Phillips) Sears and her first husband. This family line is based on the Steuben County Guardianship record attached to this memorial, which gives Jerusha's father's name as Joseph. Cyntha's second husband, Harlow "Harley" Sears, was appointed guardian of her three minor children on 18 May 1818. The record indicates that Joseph was deceased. The source citation is included in the screen shot's caption. There is some question as to whether her father's name may have actually been Sylvester P Phillips, who died during the War of 1812. This issue is being actively researched. One factor suggesting Joseph might be the correct name is that James and Jerusha named their first son Joseph. Neither Joseph nor Sylvester P has currently been identified elsewhere. If you have information about this family, please contact the manager of this memorial. Thank you!

James and Jerusha had 8 presently known children: Joseph, Hannah Amandy (Linn) Tobias, James B, Alonzo, Melissa, Harriet P, John, Lewis Giddings. A boy, Fred Linn, born about 1861, is shown in the 1870 US federal census as a son. However, he is shown in the 1875 New York State census as Fred Parmer, a grandson. Several of James and Jerusha's children spelled their surname Lynn.
