Second Lieutenant Von Arb served with the
212th Base Unit.

He was one of eight airmen killed when an
engine fire caused a structural failure of the right wing of U.S. Army Air Corps B-24J Liberator 42-100019, and the bomber crashed eight miles northwest of Gowen Field, near Boise, Idaho.

Eight crew members perished in the crash of a
Gowen Field Liberator six miles west of here
Thursday night, but three others parachuted to
safety, Col. John R. Kane,
station commandant, reported.
The huge plane crashed after flying over Boise,
where witnesses reported seeing an out-wing
motor catch fire and drop to the ground shortly
afterward.

The aircraft crashed onto the Floating Feather
airport, an auxiliary field, and fire from
the burning wreckage destroyed three small
planes, two automobiles, the hangar and a
storage shed, and started grass fires which
burned over 1,000 acres of land, the
grazing service estimated.

The crew members also killed were:

James R Southard
Edgar B Martin
Forrest E Freeman
James H Lamm
Welton E Pagenkopp
Vernon R Dennis
Paul H Fraley

Lived at 2632 Elmwood, Kansas City, Mo.
