Robert T. Williams, 91, of Wethersfield, formerly of Newington, died peacefully on August 1, 2012, at Hartford Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy Williams.

Born in Bridgeport, he graduated from Hartford Public High School and was a Newington resident for many years, before moving to Wethersfield. He owned and operated Countryside Realty, Newington, for many years. He spent many years as "MC" for NCTV Memorial Day Parade along Steve Parker and was the Co-Chairman of Newington's 1976 Bicentennial year celebration.

Bob proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the 296th Engineer (Combat) Battalion. The battalion was activated March 3, 1943, at Camp Shelby, MS. The 296th landed at Omaha Beach just days after D-Day. Their battalion continued on through France, Belgium, and Germany, during which time the 296th participated in five major battles, earning five battle stars, including the Battle of the Bulge. They fought during the coldest winter on record in Western Europe from December 1944 through February 1945. By the end of the war, the 296th was posted in Berlin, Germany.

Bob was the editor of the 296th newsletter for many years. In 2010, Bob was inducted as a chevalier or knight of the French Legion of Honor, "Ordre national de la Legion d'honneur", for his heroism in helping to liberate France from the Nazis. It is France's highest distinction.

He had been a longtime member of Grace Episcopal Church in Newington and was the originator of Grace Episcopal's Grinders for Prudence Crandall, the Great Pumpkin Fair, and the erection of the cross and bell tower. A longtime mason, he was Past District Deputy of Connecticut Masons and Past Master of Sequin Lodge and also of Sequin-Level Lodge.

His survivors include his sons and daughter and their spouses, Jeffrey and Sue Williams of Norfolk, Rick Williams of Middletown and Nancy and Tim Hogan of Newington; son-in-law, Bat Battalino of East Hartford; five grandchildren, Christian, Sarah, Christopher, Michael and Eileen; and two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Duncan. He also leaves a sister Marjorie DePlante of Newington; and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his daughter Susan Battalino, and his wives Grace and Agnes.

His funeral service will be held on Tues, Aug. 7, 2012, at 12:30pm at the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington. He will be laid to rest with military honors in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford.
