Author. Born in Turin, Italy, he was a member of Anti-fascist resistance during World War II. When captured, he was deported by the Nazis to the Auschwitz Concentration Camp in Poland in 1944, spending eleven months there until it was liberated by the Soviet Red Army in 1945. He wrote of his experiences, and his books detailed the atrocities of the Nazis in the death camps in works such as "Se Questo è un Uomo" (If This Is a Man), "La Tregua," "Storie Naturali," "Vizio di Forma," "La Ricerca delle Radici," "Se non Ora Quando" and "I Sommersi e I Salvati". In 1987, he died from injuries sustained from a fall from a third story landing. His death was ruled a suicide, but he left no note and there were no witnesses. At the time of his death he was on medication that could have affected his blood pressure which could have caused the fall. In his grave in Turin is marked the number of recognition tattooed in his arm by Nazis in Auschwitz.
