Groton, VT – Richard Hiram Daniels, Sr, 89, of Goodfellow Road, died on Friday, February 8, 2013, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab. in St. Johnsbury, VT. He was born in Groton, on April 28, 1923, the son of Hiram W. and Sophronia B. (Emery) Daniels. Richard graduated from Groton High School, class of 1941. He married Erla Darling on July 15, 1942. Richard served with the U.S. Army in the 4th Armored Division during World War II from 1944 to 1946. Following his years in the service, he worked locally as an auto mechanic. Then for thirteen years, he owned Groton Automotive. In later years, he taught auto mechanics at St. Johnsbury Trade School and then taught Driver's Ed at St. Johnsbury Academy. He retired in 1985. Following his retirement, he worked part-time at the West View Farm in North Haverhill, NH. Richard was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Woodsville, NH and enjoyed attending church and all the church activities. He even served in the pulpit on occasions at churches in Benton, NH, Woodsville, Vershire, VT and Orange, VT. He was predeceased by four sisters, Emma J. Daniels, Adeline Bernasconi, Clara E. Daniels, and Ethel Faunce; five brothers, Roland O. Daniels, Andrew Daniels, William Daniels, Oscar Daniels, and Gilbert Daniels. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Erla (Darling) Daniels of Groton; his six children, Keith L. Daniels and wife Melanie of Morgantown, PA, Richard H. Daniels, Jr. and wife Marsha of Derby Line, VT, David S. Daniels and wife Lois of Brooklyn, Ontario, Gail A. McLeod and husband Ronald of Fredericton, New Brunswick; Stephen A. Daniels and wife Judi of Waterford, VT, and Mark Daniels and wife Gloria of Wernersville, PA; 20 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
