Dennis J. Halisy was a native of Florida and of Irish descent. He was educated at St. Augustine, FL. He came to KY in 1850 and studied medicine under Dr. Daniel P. Stark at the Fidler Hotel in Haysville, Marion County, KY and he also taught school. In the 1860 Census of Washington County, KY, District II, household #58, he is listed as follows: Hallasey, D. J. , 32, B. France, physician at Manton, KY. From newspaper articles from THE LOUISVILLE DAILY JOURNAL, in Jan. 1863, supplied to me by Steven L. Wright, a serious historian of the Civil War--especially the Union, 6th Cavalry, I have gleaned the following facts concerning the life and death of Dr. Hallisey. At about dark, near New Market, KY, Wed., Dec. 31, 1862, Col. Halisy surrendered to a rebel officer and was shot in the face about one inch from his mouth and a quarter inch from his right nostril, killing him instantly. His clothes and valuables were taken from his corpse. His body was brought to the Campbell House in Lebanon, KY on New Years Day where it lay in state until Sunday, Jan. 4, 1863, when it was carried to St. Rose for burial. He was a courageous and brave citizen, an excellent Colonel, a daring soldier, a devout Catholic, a devotee of science, a splendid scholar, an outstanding physician who enjoyed the love and respect of all who new him. He lay in state, with a smile on his face, in full regimental regalia and Mrs. Foster Ray and Mrs. Capt. Gaulbert encircled his forehead with a wreath of the rarest flowers and attached a note that said, "With the Red, White, and Blue , we encircle the brow of our hero who died in the defense of his country." With Dr. Daniel P. Stark he attended medical school at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, 1853-1854, and the Jefferson Medical College In Philadelphia, PA, 1856-1857.

Dr Halisy is buried in the Hamilton lot in the East Central Section of this cemetery.
