ALICE HALL BLAKE
February 15, 1927 ~ February 1, 2013

Alice H. Blake left us February 1, 2013 after a two-year battle with cancer. She was born in Muskegon, Michigan, moving with her mother Mary, father Ralph and three sisters, Betty, Bonnie and Mary Lou, to the Coos Bay, Oregon area as a young child. Ralph packed up the car and headed west looking for work during the dark economic days of the 1930's. As her mother Mary was fond of saying, they quit driving when they hit the great Pacific Ocean.

As with many of her friends from childhood in Coos Bay, Oregon, Alice was drawn to the excitement of moving to the lights of the big city, Portland, Oregon, finding work in a downtown Portland jewelry store. In Portland, Alice met her husband of 62 years, Jack, a 32 year career Air Force officer, a committed defender of his country, as a pilot in World War II, French Indochina, Korean and Vietnam wars.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday in 1947, after returning from Europe, Jack was stationed at McCord AFB in Tacoma, Washington and flew down to a party and dance at the Multnomah Hotel in Portland, Oregon. His blind date that night was a beautiful young woman who agreed to go, even though she was planning to marry someone else. Little did she know that the love of her life would be found that evening on the dance floor.

Alice and Jack were married on New Year's Day in 1948 and for the next 62 years, she toured much of the world and the USA as Jack served our country and they shared a wonderful life full of love, family and friends. They lived apart for long periods when Jack was abroad, but Alice would wait for his letters and the excitement of one of those radio calls he would make to her while airborne over Korea or Vietnam, promising to come home to her, which he did.

After Jack retired from the Air Force in 1974, they moved to Boise, Idaho as Jack took up another career of public service by leading disaster management for the State of Idaho and Ada County. Jack became very active in the rodeo scene in Idaho, with Alice and Jack working with many aspiring rodeo queens and young people, helping them as they grew into young adults. Oh, boy, designing rodeo queen costumes was not a simple endeavor.

Upon Jack's second retirement, Alice and Jack remained in Boise, Idaho until 2006. With no family remaining in Boise, Alice and Jack packed up and moved to Vancouver, Washington to be closer to their eldest son and his family.

A year after moving to Vancouver, Washington, Alice and Jack moved into Merrill Gardens, Orchards Village where Jack could receive full time assistance for his Pakistan illness. Alice developed an extended family of friends and employees at Orchards Village. The family would like to extend a very special thanks to the employees, especially the caregivers at Orchards Village, who loved and helped care for her during the last year. A special thanks to Marie, of Hospice Southwest, for her efforts of the last three months to provide comfort to Alice.

Alice is survived by two sons, Pat and Mike Blake; and two daughters, Leslie Lukehart and Neenie Corr. Alice thanks her children and their families for the love and support they have provided her and Jack.

Alice would want to extend her heartfelt thanks for the personal care, support and love that Pat, his wife Georgelyn and their family, provided the last six years to her and Jack.

Donations are welcomed to Hospice Southwest, SW Washington Hospital in Vancouver, Washington.

On Monday, February 11, 2013, Alice H. Blake was laid to rest with her beloved Jack in a private ceremony at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
