Mrs. Elizabeth (Betty) Green Darity, age 83, of Montgomery, AL. passed away on February 10, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Martin J. Darity. She is survived by her daughter, Katie Darity Espy (Joe), grandsons Benjamin Joseph Espy (Cameron) and William Martin Espy (Schuyler) and great-grandchildren Lulu Espy and Joe Espy, and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, good friends and loving caregivers.

Betty was born in Macon, Ga. on March 29, 1929. She graduated from Miller High School and received her BA degree, Suma Cum Laude from Auburn University at Montgomery where she was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi and Omicron Delta Kappa.

Betty's career in education began when she became Secretary to the Principal of Eufaula High School. In 1967, she moved to Montgomery and was hired by Auburn University to help start a new University in Montgomery, thus becoming the very "First" employee of Auburn University at Montgomery. Her duties included recruiting students and helping in all aspects of the development of the new campus where Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) now stands. After overseeing the digging of the foundation of the very first building, Goodwyn Hall, Betty moved with her husband to Washington, D.C. when Martin was appointed State-City Travel Coordinator by the United States Congress. In Washington she worked for a number of Senators and Congressmen including Senators David Gambrell and Sam Nunn of Georgia, and Congressman Bill Dickinson of Alabama.

Upon returning to Montgomery, Betty resumed her work at AUM as Administrative Assistant to the President, Dr. H.H. Funderburk. When Dr. Funderburk was named President of Auburn University, Betty commuted daily to Auburn to work as his Administrative Assistant. When Dr. Funderburk left that position, Betty once again returned to AUM. She retired from AUM in 1996 after more than 25 years of service. At her retirement party Betty was given the official title as "Honored and Gracious Lady of AUM" and "Betty Darity Day" was declared in her honor by Governor Fob James for the State of Alabama and by Mayor Emory Folmar for the City of Montgomery.

Betty was an active member of the AUM Alumni Association, serving as Director of Publicity. She was also active in the Business Women's Council and Goodwill serving as Secretary of the Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Doll Restoration Committee. Betty was a long-time member of the Montgomery Primitive Baptist Church. Her favorite past time was traveling all over the world with her husband and seeing the United States with her husband and grandchildren.

Services will be held at Leak Memory Chapel, Wednesday, February 13th at 2:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Montgomery Primitive Baptist Church, 51 Carole Villa Drive, Montgomery, Alabama 36109. Online condolences may be made at www.leak-mc.com.
