World War I Monument. Located in Beaumont-Hamel Memorial Park, north of the town of Albert, France, is the Newfoundland Memorial. Erected on June 7, 1925, the memorial is dedicated to the members of the Newfoundland Regiment who lost their lives in World War I on the first day of the Battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916. It is the largest site which honors the memory of the 814 members of the Newfoundland Regiment whose graves are unknown.
