Suffolk County Sheriff. He graduated from Phillips Andover Academy in 1792 and Harvard University in 1796. While in college he belonged to Phi Beta Kappa and became friends with Joseph Story, who later taught at Harvard, served on the US Supreme Court, and was a mentor to Charles Pinckney Sumner’s son, Senator Charles Sumner. Charles P. Sumner studied law with Josiah Quincy and became an attorney in Boston. He joined the Democratic-Republican Party, and served as Clerk of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1806 to 1807 and 1810 to 1811. From 1819 to 1825 he was Deputy Sheriff of Suffolk County. From 1825 until shortly before his death Sumner served as Suffolk County Sheriff. He was active in the Anti-Masonic movement of the late 1820s and early 1830s. Sumner was a poet and orator, and some his works are part of the Charles P. Sumner and Charles Sumner collection at the Harvard University Archives.
