The body of S/Sgt. James Ritz Smith, 31, who died in an Army general hospital in England in April, 1948, has arrived at the Charles R. Bast funeral home, Hancock where it will rest until Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 on Sunday afternoon in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Rogers Heights, near Hancock, with Rev. Phillip Priester, Cumberland, officiating. Interment will be in an adjoining cemetery with military honors accorded by Webster Harrison Post, American Legion of Hancock.
S/Sgt. Smith was the son of James F. and the late Mrs. Cora E. Smith, Route 1, Hancock. He was employed by the Red Star Transit Co., Ohio, before induction into the Army at Camp Perry, Ohio, in 1943. He received training in Colorado, Louisiana, California, and Fort Meade before he embarked for overseas in August 1944. He was wounded in action against the enemy at Walternburg, Germany, April 14, 1945. He was removed to the hospital in England, where he died. At the time of his death he had the rank of staff sergeant.
When he first went into combat, the deceased was a private in the 33rd Division serving in infantry under General Hodges.
He was awarded not only stars for participation in the Ardennes, Central Europe, Northern France and Rhineland campaigns, and ribbons for the America Campaign and European, African, Middle Eastern Theatre, but also citations for good conduct, bronze Star, Purple Heart and Infantry badge.
Besides his father, he is survived by: brothers, Edward Francis, Charles Williams, and John Andrew, all Route 1, Hancock; and sisters, Mrs Virginia Romayne Dyer, Route 1, Hancock and Miss Anna Smith, Washington, D.C.
