United States Army Quartermaster General. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1880 and served at Fort Laramie, Wyoming. On September 12, 1883, he was appointed commissary officer at the rank of Captain, was stationed at West Point 1884 to 1889, and at various locations as Major until 1897. During the war with Spain, he was promoted to Colonel, Chief Commissary of the 1st Army Corps, on duty in Puerto Rico until December 21, 1898. On October 12, 1905, he was commissioned Commissary General of Subsistence with the rank of Brigadier General, serving in Europe until 1907, and was appointed the 24th Quartermaster General on September 16, 1916.
During WW I, he served as a delegate on the War Council to oversee and coordinate all matters of supply in the plans for more effective use of the military power of the nation. In June 1918, he was relieved of duty from the War Council and assigned to the command of the Southeastern
Department Chief of Staff. In July 1918, he was promoted to Major General and officially ceased to be Quartermaster General and remained in Army line duty until his retirement on May 1, 1920.
General Sharpe was inducted into the Quartermaster Hall of Fame in 1989.
