Elizabeth Braheney of West Hartford and Lake Haywood, East Haddam, died Wednesday, (July 10, 2002) at her home in West Hartford.

Betty was born July 27, 1917 in New Haven, daughter of the late Maurice G. and Elizabeth (McGibney) Braheney. Betty was a graduate of the University of Connecticut and held a Masters Degree from the University of Hartford. She was an English teacher for over 25 years at Sedgwick Jr. High School, West Hartford.

Prior to that, she taught at the Norwich Free Academy, Norwich. Betty was a member of the NEA, CEA, WHEA, WHRTR and the AARP. Despite her several disabilities, Betty was a fun-loving person with a marvelous sense of humor who especially enjoyed being on the go.

Of all the activities that gave her pleasure, the one that Betty enjoyed most was spending summers at Lake Haywood, which she did for 57 years. Betty also had an extraordinary memory, and, despite her blindness in later years, she could still give directions to a driver when told what landmarks she was near.

Betty is survived by her loving and devoted sister and best friend, Mary Frances Braheney, who cared for Betty for several years, and who provided much comfort to Betty in her last days. Betty is also survived by an aunt and several cousins; and a host of friends. She was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Ann Braheney.

The funeral will be Friday, 9:30 a.m. from the Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave., West Hartford with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Peter Claver Church, 47 Pleasant Street, West Hartford. Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, West Haven.

Friends may call at the funeral home TODAY from 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Library for the Blind, 47 West Street, Rocky Hill 06067 or the Sisters of St. Joseph, 27 Park Road, West Hartford 06119.

The family wishes to express much gratitude to the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice Care for the beautiful care and attention they bestowed on Betty in her final days. Published in The Hartford Courant on July 11, 2002
