Sara M. Stethem, 87, a well-known Muncie artist, died Thursday afternoon in Ball Hospital following a brief illness.

She was the widow of Claude H. "Bill" Stethem.

Born in Redkey the daughter of James W. and Susan R. Collins Bader, she grew up in Muncie and lived here until moving to Florida in 1965. She moved to Indianapolis in 1979, and returned to Muncie about a year ago.

Mrs. Stethem taught art privately in Muncie and Florida for many years. She was superintendent of the Women's Building at the Lions Delaware County Fair Grounds for nearly 20 years and exhibited her work there and at the Indiana State Fair, where she received numerous awards.

She was a member of the Waverly United Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include two sisters, Helen Dragoo, Westpoint, Miss., and Caroline VanHorn, Indianapolis; two brothers, Nelson T. Bader, Muncie, and James W. Bader, Gaston; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Monday in Meeks Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow in Hawk Cemetery. Calling hours are 3-6 p.m. Sunday or prior to services Monday at the mortuary.
