William D. Provines Passed away at home in Novato Friday, October 30, 2009 with his loving son Walter at his side. Age, 101 years.

Beloved husband of the late Edith R. Provines. Loving father of Douglas (Kathleen) Provines, Walter Provines and Ginny Johnson. Adored grandfather of Judith (Peter) Gum, Renee (Dean) Campbell and Robert (Mary) Provines. Cherished great-grandfather of Christopher, Chloe, Nathan and Megan.

Mr. Provines was born in Willits July 4, 1908. His family moved to Mill Valley in 1916 where he attended Summit School and was in the first graduating class of Old Mill School. He was a graduate of Tamalpais High School, was in the first graduating class at Collage of Marin and received his Bachelor of Science degree in business from the University of California, Berkeley.

While in college he worked from 1926 to 1929 as a locomotive fireman on the Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods railway, 7 days a week during the summer vacation. The rest of the year he filled in on Sundays for the regular fireman so he could have a day off. He also worked as a brakeman and ran the gravity cars down the mountain. He said, "it was the best job I ever had".

In 1933 he received his amateur ham radio operators license, call letters W6JBZ. During WWII he was a staff sergeant and radio man in the US Army. Mr. Provines retired after 39 years with Royal Insurance Company in San Francisco. He was a founding member of the Marin Amateur Radio Club, a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, the American Radio Relay League, the Northwestern Pacific Railroad Historical Society, the Royal Guards and an honorary member of the Tamalpais History Project.

Friends and family are invited to attend the visitation at 10AM with the Funeral Mass beginning at 11AM Thursday, November 5, 2009 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1000 Cambridge St., Novato, CA. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, San Rafael.
