Louis-Auguste Olivier
Birth: Nov. 1, 1816
Death: Sep. 18, 1881

Canadian politician and magistrate. A native of Berthierville (Québec), he studied at the seminary of Nicolet from 1827 to 1837. He was admitted to the Bar of the Lower-Canada Province, on September 7, 1839. He opened his law firm in Berthierville where, in 1846, he also cofounded the “L’Écho des campagnes”. He was a member of “La Société des Amis” created in Montréal in 1842 and was the author of several poems and of the essay "L’Essai sur la littérature”. On February 12, 1864, he was made Queen’s Counsel in law. After an initial defeat in 1862 Legislative Council election for the division of Lanaudière, he was elected the next year, in a by-election held on April 6, to this same seat. His mandate ended with the advent of the Confederation, on July 1, 1867. On September 23, 1867, he was appointed senator for the division of Lanaudière, a post he held until his nomination, on September 6, 1873, as Justice in the Superior Court of the Province of Québec. In politics, he supported the Liberal Party. He sat on the bench in the district of Joliette until his death in Joliette.  (bio by: Guy Gagnon)
