Services for Belle Courtney, 90, of 809 Sixth avenue, Marion, who died Tuesday in a Cedar Rapids hospital after a long illness, will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Murdoch chapel by the Rev. James. P. Gable. Burial will be in Oak Shade cemetery.
Miss Courtney was born Oct. 29, 1862, at the Courtney homestead five miles east of Marion. She was a daughter of Joel M. and Mary Ann Keenan Courtney, Linn county pioneers. They moved to Marion in 1891. She was educated in the rural schools, attended Cornell college academy and finished her education at Iowa State Teachers college. For 41 years she taught in the rural schools of Linn county and also at public schools in Tipton, Martelle, Ely, Kenwood school, Cedar Rapids and Emerson school, Marion. She retired in 1922. She was a member of the Methodist church.
Surviving are a sister, Retta E. Courtney, and a sister-in-law Mrs. M.W. Courtney, both of Marion. Friends may call at the chapel.
