Reuben A. 'Ben' Meggitt, 83, a stalwart pillar of St. Johns County veterans, passed quietly on Feb. 20, 2013. Meggitt was born in Cheboygan, Mich., on Nov. 26, 1929. He and his wife Niti 'Nicky' Bast of Copenhagen, Denmark, were married on Aug. 3, 1971. He was an Army veteran serving from Dec. 22, 1947, to Dec. 3, 1953, and Sept. 16, 1954, to April 30, 1971, retiring at the rank of MSGT. He served 20 years in the Department of Veteran Affairs as a field examiner serving elderly veterans until he retired. He is survived by his wife, Nicky; twin sister Ruby, sister Marybeth, and brother Everett, all of Michigan; two daughters, Paula and Pam, both of Kentucky; adopted daughter Tina of Georgia; three grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Ben never met a stranger and will by sorely missed by all. His ashes will be interred at the Jacksonville National Cemetery. The Neptune Society in Jacksonville is in charge of arrangements.
