Leo J. Burkart, age 90, of 2016 S. 35th St., Manitowoc, died on Tuesday evening, Dec. 14, 2010, at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, Manitowoc.
Leo was born Dec. 20, 1919, in Sumatra, Mont., to the late Frank and Olivia (Hecker) Burkart. On Oct. 3, 1945, he married Dolores Endries at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, Wis. Leo owned and operated the family farm in Clover, Wis. until it's sale in 1958. During his farming career he also owned and operated a milk route for Lake to Lake Dairy. Leo then was employed with Manitowoc Engineering Company, of Manitowoc, as a truck driver until his retirement. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 710.

Leo was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Francis Burkart; two brothers and one sister-in-law: Joseph and Helena Burkart, Arthur Burkart; two sisters and five brothers-in-law: Catherine and Elmer Schaefer; Rose Poch, Frank Herber, Alphonse Endries, Lee Bushman, Emmet Klusmeyer; and two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law: Rita and Henry Wilke and Jean Mueller.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 20, 2010, at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Richard Klingeisen, with entombment to follow at Knollwood Mausoleum, town of Kossuth.
The family will greet relatives and friends Monday morning, Dec. 20, 2010, at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Gary Schmidt, Holy Family Hospice Care Team, as well as Shady Lane for all they did. Also, a very special thank you to Mel and Shirley Ouradnik for being wonderful neighbors. Your care and support for Leo and Dolores was greatly appreciated.
Leo was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who adored spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
