Dale L. "Burly" Whitford, 63, died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 1988, at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison.

The eldest son of Thurl and Mabel Peterson Whitford was born in Argyle. He attended schools in Darlington, Mineral Point, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dale served his country from January 1944 until March 1946 as Staff Sergeant of the 42nd Infantry Division of the European Theatre. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge in Germany and was proud to have been among the forces to have liberated Dachau, Germany. He served until wounded in Niederbitchbarf in January 1945. He received the Purple Heart, The Bronze Star, a Combat Infantry Metal and numerous other military decorations.

Dale was employed by the farmers Store, Mineral Point, since the fall of 1949 and worked as salesman and mechanic until his retirement in June, 1988.

Dale married the former Dorothy Mae Ripley, Cashton, June 20, 1956, in Sheridan, Wyo. They were married 23 years before her death in October 1979. They had four children: Mrs. Lyle (Sharon) Fahrni, Arena, Mrs. John (Valerie) Foley, Highland, Steven E. (Peggy) Whitford, Mineral Point, and Mrs. Todd (Cynthia) Doney, Mineral Point.

April 23, 1983, Dale L. Whitford was joined in marriage to Catherine A (Hawke) Skidmore, Trinity Episcopal Church, Mineral Point. Their daughters are: Mrs. Scott (Mary) Kramer, Scottsdale, Ariz, and Mrs. Stephen (Debra) Pickett, Darlington.

Dale L. is further survived by his brothers and sister, Paul (Rita) Whitford, Mineral Point, Penny (Donald) Laverty, Beaver Dam, and Gerald (Rita) Whitford, Monona, and ten grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Hope Lutheran Church. Full Military services were held at the graveside at Graceland Cemetery.
