Roger passed away Friday morning, March 1, 2013, at his home in Fairmont.
Roger Carl Holtey was born Oct. 25, 1937, in Montevideo, Minn., the son of Carl and Alma (Lindahl) Holtey. At 4 years of age, the family moved to the state of Washington where his father found wartime employment at Boeing Aircraft. Roger received his formal education in Washington State. He graduated from Yakima High School in 1955, and Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash., in 1959. Upon college graduation, Roger accepted a position as District Scout Executive with the Viking Council Boy Scouts in Minneapolis. He took a leave of two years to serve in the United States Army, spending a year at the DMZ in South Korea. After his discharge, he continued to work with the Viking Council in Minneapolis, where he met and married Marilyn Hanson on July 24, 1965. They moved to southern California when Roger took a position working with the Old Baldy Boy Scout Council in Claremont, Calif. In 1968, Roger began studies at University of California Riverside to earn his secondary teaching degree in business. His teaching career began in San Jacinto, Calif., in 1968, through an intern program. In 1970, Roger accepted a teaching position with the Fairmont School system where he taught accounting and business courses until his retirement in 1999. Roger and Marilyn's marriage was blessed with two children, Laura Holtey Pettis and Marc Holtey. The three grandchildren; Emma, Elliana, and Ethan Pettis were Roger's pride and joy. Roger's life was dedicated to his family, his teaching, and service to his church and community. While teaching, he was active in his church, Grace Lutheran, serving as an eighth-grade Sunday School teacher for many years, church council, president of the congregation, church choir member, and adult Bible Study leader. After retirement he dedicated time to community organizations as well, serving on the Kinship board, Healthy Youth Committee, Services for Challenging Youth, Success Academy, and was a member and past president of Early Risers Kiwanis. He facilitated grief groups and enjoyed helping with visitations and funerals for Lakeview Funeral Home.
Left to cherish he memory is his wife of 47 years, Marilyn Holtey of Fairmont, Minn.; children, Laura Pettis and her husband, Geoff of Lakeville, Minn., Marc Holtey of Minneapolis, Minn.; three grandchildren, Emma, Elliana, and Ethan Pettis; cousins, John Holtey, Carol Jauss, and John Aslakson; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Richard and Karen Hanson, Kenneth and Judy Hanson, Ronald and Marcia Cherland, and L. Steven and Karen Hanson; six nephews and five nieces; as well as many friends. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Alma Holtey; an infant brother, Alan Thomas; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Laurence and Eldora Hanson.
