POLANDO, Dorothy "Dode" On March 30th, born Dorothy Ann Booth, in Detroit on February 23, 1916. Dode, formerly of Swampscott, and Sandwich, MA, and for the past 25 years a resident of Portsmouth, NH, was the wife of the late John L. Polando, a pioneer aviator. Dode was devoted to helping others and was a tireless volunteer for numerous charitable organizations including Cross-Roads House of Portsmouth, The Portsmouth Women's City Club, and St. John's Church of Portsmouth. She was an active member of the Order of Daedaliens and a past board member. She authored the book "Wings Over Istanbul", a chronicle of her late husband's accomplishments in the early days of aviation, that included a long-distance non-stop record flight with Russell Boardman from New York to Istanbul, Turkey in 1931. She leaves a daughter, Jo Anne Goodwin Rogers of Silver Lake, NH, and two sons, James Polando of Weston, MA and David Polando of Provincetown, MA, four grand children and six great grand children. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 Chapel St., Portsmouth, NH 03801, on Sat., April 7th, at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider sending a donation in Dorothy's memory to St. John's Church in Portsmouth.
