John L. Henschel, 86, of New Holstein, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, at the Willowdale Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in New Holstein.
He was born Feb. 17, 1919, in New Holstein, a son of the late John and Mary (Leider) Henschel. John attended Hilbert schools. John served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he attained the rank of Corporal serving in the 3rd Army Division in the 191st Tank Battalion in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. He was captured during the Battle of The Bulge; he received the Purple Heart for his wounds.
On July 3, 1950, he married Emmy Hoekstra in Dodgeville.
John had worked at Tecumseh Engine Products in New Holstein. He retired Oct. 1, 1981. He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in New Holstein. John was a life member of American Ex-Prisoners of War and Disabled American Veterans and a member of the New Holstein American Legion Post 124.
Survivors include his wife, Emmy of New Holstein; a daughter, Christine Miller of Cookeville, Tenn.; and a brother, William (Charlotte) Bechlem of New Holstein.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John L. Henschel Jr.; two brothers, Harvey Henschel and Henry Bechlem; and two sisters, Margie TeVrucht and Marcella Raschke.
A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced. The Sippel Funeral Home in New Holstein (920) 898-4300 is assisting with arrangements.
