Sylvan J. Hessel, age 83, of Francis Creek, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 at the Aurora Medical Center, Two Rivers.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Francis Creek, with the Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by the Rev. Theodore Hendricks. Entombment will be at Knollwood Mausoleum, Highway 310, Manitowoc.
Sylvan was born March 9, 1919 in Francis Creek. He was the son of the late Edward and Agnes Benishek Hessel. He graduated from Washington High School, Two Rivers. He continued his education and graduated from the Manitowoc Teachers College. Sylvan then continued his college education at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and UW-Madison. He taught in Manitowoc County for four years. Sylvan was employed with Manitowoc Engineering Corporation as a buyer in the purchasing department for 33 years retiring in June 1981.
He married Marie T. Miller on May 5, 1953. She preceded him in death Feb. 17, 1979. Sylvan was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, director of the St. Anne Adult Choir for more than 25 years, past member of St. Anne's Worship Committee, Vicariate Representative, St. Anne Parish Council, communion distributor, teacher in the religious education program and other various activities as called upon. He was also a past member of the Masquers Inc. and was an usher at the Capitol Civic Centre. He was also a soloist for weddings in Manitowoc County and surrounding counties.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Marie on Feb. 17, 1979; two brothers-in-law: Edward J. Menchal and Anthony Serwas; and one sister-in-law: Lydia Miller.
Friends may call at St. Anne's Catholic Church on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service to conclude the visitation at 7 p.m. led by his niece, Sister Joann Serwas. Friends may also call at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 628 N. Water St., Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
Sylvan was a man who enjoyed life to the fullest. We rejoice that this strong faith has reunited him with his loving wife "Mayme" in heaven.
