Jack Caruthers Vowell Jr., loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 79. Mr. Vowell served 7 terms in the Texas Legislature until his retirement in 1994. He was the first El Paso Republican to win a general election seat in the Texas Legislature. He was twice chosen by Texas Monthly as one of the "Ten Best" legislators. Prior to serving in the Legislature Mr. Vowell was President of Vowell Construction Company and taught Political Science at UTEP. During his many years of public and community service Mr. Vowell received numerous awards and honors including the Gran Paisa Award from UTEP, the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America, the Hannah G. Solomon Award from the El Paso Section of the National Council of Jewish Women, and he was a two time recipient of the El Conquistador Award presented by the City of El Paso. Mr. Vowell was preceded in death by his parents, Jack Caruthers Vowell Sr. and Daurice McDaniel Vowell and sister Daurice Anderson. He is survived by his wife, Mary Vowell, daughter Janice Vowell Alexander and her husband, Jay, two grandsons Jayson and Jackson Alexander. Mr. Vowell is also survived by his sister-in-law, Betsy Johnson and her children. Funeral Service will be held Friday, September 1, 2006 at 1:30 P.M. at Martin Funeral Home West, 128 North Resler, with Fr. Jeff Lambert officiating. A private family graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the UTEP Library, 500 West University Avenue, El Paso, Texas 79968. Services entrusted to Martin Funeral Home West.
